What to Wear to Your Newborn Photo Session (Without the Stress)

Plan your Newborn Photoshoot Outfits – Styling made Easy!

Choosing the perfect outfits for family photos can feel like a high-stakes fashion puzzle—but it doesn’t have to be!

Your newborn photo session is almost here and you’re likely running on little to no sleep, adjusting to a brand new version of yourself, and trying to figure out this whole motherhood thing, and somehow scrolling endlessly through Pinterest trying to piece together outfits for the whole family. If that feels familiar, you’re not alone. And here’s the honest truth: newborn photo outfits don’t need to be complicated to be beautiful. In-fact, keeping things simple almost always leads to the most timeless, natural images.  After photographing hundreds of newborn and family sessions across the South Bay, I’ve seen it time and time again–what works best really comes down to a few simple choices. In this post, I’ll break down exactly what to wear (and what to avoid) so your family photos look beautifully coordinated and effortlessly stylish.  I’ve even added below a simple outfit cheat sheet to this blog that sums it up.

Tried-and-True Outfit Ideas to Follow for Newborn Photos

Stick to the Same Color Vibe

This certainly does not mean everyone has to match or wear the exact same thing.  I encourage families to mix it up and add texture and color.  You just want your outfits to feel like they go together when you’re all in the photo.  Think less “matching outfits” and more “same overall color palette.”  Think Blues and Neutrals with accent colors like Blush and Sage – Pinterest has some great palette ideas.

Skip the Dark + Super Bold Colors

In my studio, your baby will be wrapped in soft, light tones or wearing muted colored outfits.  When you wear black, deep jewel tones, or really bright colors, it can pull attention away from your baby.  Softer neutrals keep everything feeling connected-and keep the focus right where it should be–your little angel.

Keep it Simple

No need to overthink it.  Skip heavy accessories, lots of layers, or anything too styled.  The simpler it is, the more natural and beautiful your photos will feel-and the more your family (and that sweet baby) will stand out.  Also, comfort is non-negotiable–even for you!  Keep in mind that you’ll be getting on the floor, moving in different directions and shifting positions that include holding your baby close.  So avoid scratchy clothing or anything that could be abrasive or tight.

Real Families, Real Style – Straight from my Studio

Here are two families that came to my studio and exactly why their outfits work: First time parents sitting posing against an off-white backdrop with their newborn baby wearing neutral colors and baby wearing a light blue outfit. Why it works: Parents are wearing neutral colors while baby is wearing a light aqua-marine colored outfit.
Family of four sitting on almond-colored backdrop with mom holding newborn while toddler in on dad's shoulders. Mom wearing a cream outfit and dad and son are wearing an olive green colored shirt.
Why it works:  Mother is wearing cream and holding baby in a cream outfit, while father and son are wearing an olive-colored shirt that blends the colors well together.

Simple Outfit Cheat Sheet for Newborn Photo Session

  • Stick to neutrals and softer tones – Stay away from bold and vibrant colors
  • Skip the fancy occasion wear and think comfort (linen, cotton, relaxed knits)
  • No need to match but stay in the same color family
  • Remember baby is the focus!
