Having a Baby? Hospital Bag Must-Haves

Black Hospital bag from Etsy

It’s that time!

The moment is near – the nursery is set, the car seat is installed, and now it’s time to pack one of the most important bag you’ll ever carry – your hospital bag.

Whether you are a first-time parent or adding another little one to the family, knowing what to pack (and what to leave behind) can bring peace of mind.  You might be asking how I know what should be packed in a hospital bag since my kids are in college.  As a newborn photographer, it is important to me to know what parents wish they had packed for their delivery so I can pass those tips along to help my clients feel more comfortable, prepared, and at ease during labor and delivery.  Having everything ready by week 36 means you’re prepared if baby decides to make an early appearance!  Whether you’re a first-time parent or expecting your second (or third!), here’s a comprehensive list of essential items to include in your hospital bag — for mom, baby, and your birth partner.

What to Pack for Mom

Labor and delivery are unpredictable, but comfort can make all the difference in the world. You’ll want to pack the following items:

*Loose, comfy clothes for after giving birth (think nursing-friendly pajamas or a soft robe/gown – I recommend two sets. A nightgown is great if you a c-section because your incision on your belly will be tender)
*Nursing bras or tanks, even if your unsure whether you’ll breastfeed
*Non-slip socks or slippers for walking around the room or halls of the hospital
*Flip flops for the shower
*Depends underwear (trust me, you’ll much rather have this than mesh underwear with a gigantic pad)
*A comfortable going home outfit (a loose-fit dress or sweats is my 1st choice)
*A 10ft charging cord
*Pillow (or two)
*Towel
*Toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothpaste)
*Toothbrush
*Hairbrush
*Chapstick
*Nipple cream
*Portable fan
*Nursing boppy
*Essential oils and diffuser
*ID and insurance card
*Medications (you’ll need to ask whether your meds should be taken or not)
or sweats is my 1st choice)

What to Pack for Baby

*Socks
*Different types of pacifiers
*4 newborn outfits (nothing too fancy and easy to slip on and off.  If your baby is likely to be lighter in weight, don’t forget premie size)
*Soft hats
*Hospital will have diapers but if you have a particular brand or want cloth diapers, I’d suggest packing them)

What to Pack for Partner

*Comfortable clothing (sweatshirt because it could be chilly)
*Toiletries and medications
*Pillow/Blanket
*Entertainment items
*Charging cord for cell phone
*Snacks
