Bringing a newborn into the world is one of life’s most beautiful and tender moments. Capturing those early days with professional photography helps preserve the memories of tiny toes, sleepy yawns, and the sweet bond between you and your baby. One of the biggest decisions new parents face is whether to book an in-home or a studio newborn session. Both have their benefits — and the right choice depends on your lifestyle, comfort, and vision. Before baby arrives, do your research on the type of session you like best when it comes to photographing your newborn. Would you prefer a story-tell feel or a more curated, classic look? When you think of lifestyle, think of photos in your home – in the baby nursery or in the master bedroom with your dog. When it comes to studio photography, lighting is perfect and props at your fingertips.
The most obvious reason would be of course the convenience. Parents do not have to worry about all the things it requires to get out the door. After having a baby, sometimes traveling is not easy, especially if it was a difficult birth. So having the photographer come to the home can just be easier. Being in your own environment also can be less stress for parents and baby. Some parents may find it easier to have all the baby necessities nearby to rather than packing the diaper bag and possibly forgetting to pack an item. With an in home session, it’s all about the simplicity.

With an in home session, a photographer is not familiar with the home set-up. First, lighting is very important for photographers, so an in home session can be challenging if the client’s home has very little windows to allow in natural light. If the photographer brings lighting equipment, there will need to be space for the lighting or the photographer will need to modify to create natural lighting. A photographer may need access to several parts of the home to determine the best location for photos, unlike a studio that a photographer has full control. Of course, a photographer will work with what they have but nothing surpasses the kind of light a photographer can create in her own studio.

Studio photography allows the photographer behind the lens to produce a work of art. All the elements of studio photography are at the photographers finger tips. Nothing beats having control of the background, the props, and the lighting. Taking pictures in a perfectly lit setting gets you better results with just the right amount of light and diffusion. Studios tend to be professionally-curated and contains a more neutral setting that brings with it a sense of calmness. You’ll find with studio photography there are less distractions and all the attention is on baby while the parents can relax and let the photographer take over. A studio allows the temperature to be controlled, providing a warmer room for a baby to settle and feel relaxed. Likely the biggest benefit to a studio session…no need to tidy up. Why have that added stress when studio photography is an easy choice.
For a studio session, travel will be required. You’ll need to think ahead and pack essentials. Baby will need to eat during the session so feeding must be considered. While beautiful, the studio doesn’t reflect your home or lifestyle. Sessions are often posed and styled, with a focus on artistic photos. My newborn sessions never involve putting baby in unnatural poses. I take a classic approach to my photography.

First, no matter which newborn photo session you choose, I will capture GORGEOUS images of your family with your new baby that you will be excited to share with friends and family. As a newborn and maternity photographer, I’ve spent a lot of time choosing all of the items for my studio. I chose pure colors – white, cream, tan, beige, and grey with lots of textures, which makes your family the main focus of the images. You should also know that the poses for in-home or studio is essentially the same. You’ll hold your baby naturally, sitting on a bed or a chair, standing by a window, sitting on the floor. So while the backdrop will be different and of course the feel will be different, essentially the goal is the same–to keep the focus on your baby and your family with natural poses and genuine emotion.
Whether you’re looking for a cozy in-home session or a more styled studio experience, I’m there for you. Every baby — and every family — is different, and your session should reflect that. If you’re looking for a professional newborn photographer, I invite you to get in touch with me and we can discuss options and get you scheduled. I can’t wait to meet you and your baby.
