Whether you’re planning family photos, a maternity session, or newborn photography, a little preparation can help you get the most out of your experience. In this post, I’m sharing five simple tips to help you prepare for your portrait session, feel confident in front of the camera, and ensure your photos turn out beautifully. From choosing outfits to planning ahead for the day, these easy photo session preparation tips will help make your experience smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free.

Why Preparation for a Portrait Session Makes a Difference

It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed before a portrait session.  Many people worry about how they’ll pose, what to wear, or whether they’ll look awkward in front of the camera. Certainly preparing ahead of time helps reduce those nerves. Planning a pre-session consultation to walk through the process and ask questions is a great way to help give you the confidence for your session.  When you know what to expect, you can relax and focus on being present.

Select & Prep Outfits Early (earlier the better)

For less stress and last-minute scrambling, get your outfits prepped well in advance. Very well in advance! I recommend choosing and preparing outfits at least three weeks before your session, if not earlier. Things can come up last minute with outfits – they don’t fit the way you’d like, or it turns out – surprise – you need some special type of bra or undergarment to go with it, or the colors aren’t really what you envisioned – and you might need that extra time to recalibrate. Planning ahead will also give you ample time to make sure your items are steamed or pressed to minimize any unsightly wrinkles.

I do everything I can to help make your session stress-free, which is why I’m happy to offer assistance with wardrobe. But as the mom, let’s be honest – you’re most likely going to be the one dealing with getting the outfits ready not just for yourself, but for your whole family – as well as getting yourself and your kids ready and out the door, to the location, etc…it’s a lot of work! The last thing you need on your plate is some kind of last-minute wardrobe snafu. So take that stressor off your mind by getting outfits prepped ahead! You may also want to schedule a hair and makeup artist for yourself for the morning of your session, so that’s someone to find and schedule as far as in advance as possible (I have a few referrals and certainly more than happy to help with that!).

Helpful wardrobe tips:

*Avoid busy patterns, loud colors, bold logos

*Avoid the baggy look. While comfort is key, baggy tends to add bulk

*Make sure undergarments are hidden from every angle

*Coordinate outfits without matching

*Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel your best self

Preparing the Kids

One of the best ways to ensure a successful family photo session is to prepare your children ahead of time. Whether you have toddlers, preschoolers, or older kids, talking about the session in a positive and exciting way can help them feel comfortable and confident when photo day arrives.

In the days leading up to your session, share how much fun you’ll have together. Talk about the games you’ll play, the songs you might sing, and the special moments you’ll create as a family. Rather than presenting it as something they “have to do,” frame it as a fun family activity. You may even want to plan a favorite treat, playground visit, or family outing afterward to give them something extra to look forward to.

Children often feel more at ease when they know what to expect. Consider showing them a photo of your photographer beforehand so that meeting someone new feels familiar rather than intimidating. This simple step can help ease nerves and make the experience more enjoyable for everyone.

In addition to preparing them mentally, it’s important to consider your child’s routine. Family and portrait sessions are typically scheduled mid-morning. If possible, adjust nap times or bedtimes in the days leading up to your session so your little ones are well-rested and in a happy mood. A small schedule adjustment can go a long way toward helping children feel their best and ensuring a smooth, stress-free photography session.

Fuel the Fun

We’ve all experienced what it’s like to be hungry and tired, and children are no exception. A missed snack, skipped nap, or disrupted routine can quickly lead to crankiness, making it harder for everyone to relax and enjoy the experience. By prioritizing rest and nourishment before your session, you’re setting the stage for genuine smiles, playful interactions, and beautiful family photos.

I also recommend offering a filling meal or snack before you leave for your session and packing a few easy, non-messy snacks and water bottles to bring along. Favorites like crackers, dry cereal, fruit snacks, or pouches can be great options for quick breaks when needed. Having a few familiar comforts on hand can help keep energy levels up and spirits high throughout the session.

Remember, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s creating an environment where your children feel their best. When kids are comfortable, rested, and content, they’re much more likely to engage naturally, resulting in authentic moments and joyful images you’ll treasure for years to come.

Comfort Creates Magic

Feeling comfortable with your photographer is one of the most important parts of a successful portrait session.  When you trust the person behind the camera, it becomes much easier to be yourself.  The photographer’s job is more than just snapping the camera–it’s to help guide you, reassure you, and create a warm environment where you feel at ease.  At Heather Nicole Photography Studio in Redondo Beach,  I do just that!  Choosing a photographer that makes you feel comfortable can make a guge difference in how your photos turn out.

Trust the Process

One of the best things you can bring to your session is a relaxed, positive attitude. The most beautiful photos happen when families focus less on perfection and more on simply being together. When everyone arrives ready to have fun, embrace the moment, and go with the flow, that’s when the magic happens.

Children are incredibly intuitive and often mirror the energy of the adults around them. If parents are relaxed and enjoying themselves, kids are much more likely to do the same. That’s why I encourage families to leave expectations at the door and trust the process. Sometimes the most meaningful images come from the unexpected moments—the giggles, cuddles, curious explorations, and little interactions in between the posed shots.

Of course, we’ll capture those classic smiling-at-the-camera portraits. That’s an important part of every session and something I always prioritize. But once we have those images, my goal is to create space for genuine connection and authentic moments that tell your family’s story.

During your session, focus on loving on your little ones. Snuggle them, kiss their cheeks, hold their hands, play games, and make them laugh.

With years of experience photographing young children, I’ll gently guide you every step of the way. There’s no need to worry about directing, correcting, or getting everyone to cooperate perfectly. Instead, trust me to handle the flow of the session while you focus on enjoying time with your family.

The less pressure everyone feels, the more natural the experience becomes—and the more authentic, joyful, and meaningful your photos will be.

I hope these five tips for preparing for your portrait photography session have been helpful and have you feeling excited for your upcoming photos. Remember, I’m here to support you every step of the way. My goal is to make the entire experience as seamless and stress-free as possible so you can focus on enjoying the moment and creating beautiful memories with the people you love.
