One of the very common questions parents ask before booking their newborn photography session is:
“How long will the newborn photo session actually take?”
And the honest answer to that question is, “It will take longer than an ordinary portrait session — but for a very good reason.
Newborn photography is meant to be gentle, unhurried, and completely baby-led. Unlike family or maternity sessions where we can move seamlessly from one pose to the next, newborn sessions are centered around your baby’s unique needs, comfort, and pace.
At Heather Nicole Photography Studio, newborn session typically last about 3 hours. This provides plenty of time for photos with parents, siblings, etc. as well as the other things like feedings, diaper changes, soothing, and cuddles. While that may sound like a long session, the experience is intentionally designed to feel calm, relaxed, and stress-free. The photo session is never rushed and I follow your baby’s lead, creating a peaceful environment for everyone involved.
Let’s be honest, babies run the schedule.
That means we pause whenever needed for:
The goal is never to just “push through” but rather create an environment where your baby settles in and stays comfortable through the entire experience while I capture beautifully, curated images that you’ll love for years.
So that means that if your baby needs extra time to settle, we take it.
If your baby needs three feedings, that’s completely normal too.
This slower pace is actually what makes professional newborn photography and standard portrait sessions different. If you are exploring whether professional newborn portraits are the right investment, you may also enjoy reading my blog, “Is Professional Photography Worth The Cost?”
Here is what a typical session at my studio looks like:
When you arrive, there’s time to get comfortable, unpack baby essentials, and settle into the studio space. I will walk you through how the session will flow and ask if you have any questions. Many parents arrive sleep-deprived and adjusting to life with a newborn, so I intentionally keep my studio space quiet, warm, and low-stress.
If you haven’t read my blog, “How To Prepare For Your Newborn Photo Session.”
I typically start a newborn session focused on capturing the tiny details of a baby – those close-up shots of the baby’s eyelashes, fingers, feet and hands. I’ll do my best to grab those sweet peaceful expressions babies tend to display. Next, I’ll move to a variety of wraps and outfits to produce those beautifully, softly posed images. Actually, the quite opposite.
The extra time is what removes the pressure.
Parents often say to me that they were worried and stressed but instead felt calm –almost like taking a quiet pause during the chaos and uncertainty of early parenthood.
This is probably the biggest fear for parents…but I tell them to not worry. It’s completely okay.
Some babies sleep the entire session.
Some stay awake.
And some need a little extra time to settle.
All of it is Normal!
During my many years of experience working with newborns, I’ve seen it all.

Of course, beautiful images are important–but the experience matters too.
Newborn photography is really about pressing pause on a season that passes by far too quickly.
The tiny fingers wrapped around yours.
The sleepy stretches.
The way your baby nestles perfectly into your arms.
These are the tiny details you’ll want to remember long after they’ve grown…..and that is why newborn sessions are designed to be slow, intentional, and unrushed.
