Baby-led posing is exactly what it sounds like…it is a gentle, natural approach to newborn photography that allows your little one to be comfortable.  Rather than forced into a pretzel-like position that can look awkward, this more authentic approach allows babies’ tiny features–fingers, feet and toes, to relax and create a more pure, classic image.  Not every baby is the same–some like to lie on their back while others prefer to rest on their belly.  I find this is the best way to document all the sweet details that change so quickly.

There are many different types of newborn photography and today I’d like to share with you why I choose the more natural approach with guided, gentle posing. For me, I am drawn to creating a more simple, clean photograph that keeps the attention on the baby and does not distract from the beauty of your newborn.  I avoid excessive use of props and bright, bold colors. Instead, I incorporate light color palettes and neutrals to achieve that timeless look.  I may occasionally use a darker colored blanket, wrap, or small prop (like a pillow) to add some flair or variety that provides parents a unique selection with a twist.

I work with your baby’s cues without placing unnecessary stress on your baby’s developing body.  Every newborn is different. Baby-led posing means your baby’s natural movements and comfort determine each pose.  If your baby resists a position, I will simply move on to one that feels natural and comfortable.
